newly diagnosed with dry eye

Hi all. I'm a woman in my mid-40s. Last week I had what seemed like a migraine (I have had occasional migraines since my 20s) but now has oddly left me with a case of dry eye syndrome. It seemed to just come out of nowhere. I am a week into this and trying to find relief with artificial tears as recommend by my doctor. I wear progressive glasses and now my eyes seem too tired to even try to see through my glasses. I am so glad to have discovered this group and I look forward to learning more from this site. Thanks to everyone who created this community.

  1. welcome to the community. Your symptoms sound so familiar. In my experience it make require more than artificial tears. Some in the community choose a dry eye specialist to help manage their symptoms. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

    1. Hi! I am sorry you are part of this dry eye community but I am so grateful for this community too! I can relate to your post. I started having migraines seemingly out of the blue and then dry eye. Have you had a dry eye evaluation?

      1. Thanks for replying. I have had migraines for years so I am still confused about the possible link. I am getting a dry eye evaluation in a few weeks. My symptoms have lessened from the initial onset but are still persistent. It seems my allergy nasal spray makes it worse so I have cut back on that as well.

      2. My eye doctor told me there’s a neuro inflammation link that connects them. It seems the more you can get your dry eye under the control the better it’s suppposed to be. Please keep us updated on your dry eye evaluation and how it went!

    2. , I am so sorry to hear about your issue. I tried many eye drops on the market but nothing worked except for some side effects.
Some time back I consulted with my doctor through the telehealth Ongo Care and got a prescription and advice. Through my doctor's prescription, I tried Blink Gel Tears drop, and it finally relieved the severeness to an extent and had no side effects. Now I am better with this drop and carry it wherever I go.

      1. thanks for sharing your experience with tele-health. I am glad it resulted in a recommendation for eye drops that work well for you. I found the ones you mentioned OTC. We’re yours prescription? Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

    3. I had my dry eye evaluation today. I do have early stage of MGD - so that explains some of my symptoms, and I have some redness and i forgot the term for that. I am going to start prescription drops and we'll see how that goes. I also ordered an eye cleaning spray that the doctor recommended and I will add an eye mask to my daily routine. Will see how all of that goes. THey also want to try one of those heat treatments in office, but its so $$ that I am going to do this other stuff first.
Two other complications: they found a nevis on my eye, so I have to see a retina specialist to ensure it is not cancerous. And, I had to adjust to new eyeglasses during all of this and I'm still not sure what is causing blurriness in my left eye. the dry eye...or if my new progressive lenses (I'm not new to progressives, just to these lenses) are the issue. sigh.

      1. so sorry you are having to cope with so many issues with your eyes. Hopefully the treatment plan will help relieve your symptoms without the more expensive treatment your doctor recommended. I use the Bruder microwaveable eye mask and find it very helpful. Keep us posted after your visit to the retinal specialist. I hope you get a good report. Warm wishes, Sharon Moore patient leader
