HRT causing dry eye to be worse?

Hi, I'm suspicious that my severe dry eye got considerably worse after changing onto new HRT medication - Oestrogel and Utrogestan.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  1. according to my research HRT therapy can cause dry eye syndrome. I have not experienced this personally.

Have you spoken with your doctor about it? Perhaps a change could be made to a medication less drying to the eyes.

    1. Thanks Sharon. I've researched a fair bit myself and there is some suggestion that it can cause dry eye but also some evidence that in some cases it helps (as dry eye can be a menopause symptom anyway). I can't find any information on specific kinds of HRT though and which kinds might be more likely to cause it. My GP is uninformed and unconvinced of my theory and my corneal consult says that it can be explored as a last resort if nothing else works. I've had antibiotics, vitamin A night cream, artificial tears, steroid drops and punctal plugs so far but not helped at all. Next and last step (I thinkI'mexpensive

      1. pharmacists are the experts on medications. While your pharmacist can’t prescribe medication they can tell you which one is more or less likely to cause dry eyes as a side effect. I do hope you get it sorted out. Sharon, patient leader

    2. Sharon Moore thank you, I hadn’t thought to ask my pharmacist!

      1. , After HRT, I also suffered from the same due to changes in estrogen levels that caused dry eye. I consulted with my doctor through telehealth Ongo Care and got prescription medications that increase my tear production, It relieved me with over-the-counter artificial tears that help lubricate and moisturize the eye. My doctor told me that the hormone changes during menopause are associated with vision changes and ocular disease. The hormone therapy can restore your estrogen levels, But in my case, it was worst. Some studies have shown that dry eyes improve with HRT, but others have shown that HRT makes dry eye symptoms more severe.

        1. thank you for sharing your experience with HRT therapy and chronic dry eyes. I am so glad they were able to help you increase tear production with medication. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader
