Stone-like feeling in eyes

I have suffered for years with dry eyes. I use cream and drops prescribed by my doctor. Recently, when I get up during the night, I can't see when I turn on the light and I have to shut my eyes. It feels like little stones in my eyes, particularly my left eye. I had cataracts removed some years ago and my eyes have never been right since. Has anyone else experienced this?

  1. Hi . Have you seen an ophthalmologist since these symptoms started? If not, it might be time to go back for a really thorough evaluation just to make sure all is well with the new lenses. Dry eye and inflammation of the eye lid can sometimes produce a gritty feeling. Is that what you are experiencing? Here is an article about gritty eyes with some suggestions for at-home treatments: https://chronicdryeye.net/symptoms/gritty-itchy. I hope this helps. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Same with me. I had cataracts removed in 2022 and have now been diagnosed with chronic dry eye disease. I also have Nocturnal Lagophthalmos and sleep with my eyes open which worsens my condition. So I have to sleep with my eyes taped shut and a sleep mask. I use Refresh Plus drops at bedtime and every time I get up during the night. Many times my eyes are glued shut so I irrigate them with saline solution before gently opening them. It helps a lot and prevents corneal abrasions.

      1. I am glad I am not the only one who opens her eyes while sleeping, ! I don't tape mine shut, but I wear a weighted eye mask and I keep lubricating drops on my night stand. I use Lumify drops in the mornings to clear the redness and ease the burning. Did you have dry eye symptoms before the surgery? Do warm compresses in the morning or before bed help? Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

    2. I wasn’t diagnosed with chronic dry eye syndrome until after cataract surgery. I do use warm eye compresses when I get up every morning. I would love not to tape my eyes shut at night so I may try a weighted eye mask! I have a large collection of different eye masks that I have tried. The biggest relief I have found during the day has been using OPTIMEL Manuka honey eye gel 2-3 times per day.

      1. Thanks for sharing what helps, . I hope you find a weighted eye mask that works for you. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    3. Having researched at great length it is common knowledge, but noone spells it out due to steroids there is an increase in dermo mites which can cause blepharits and clog up maobian glands, after suffering for 5 long years- this is what caused my dry eye… having had 60 IPL laser treatment to unclog my glands and clean my face 3 times a day with a solution of tea trea oil and water water, 50 /50 for 6 weeks and having had acupuncture for the last 4 month once a week,my eyes are getting better…finally. This was only because I did my own research and had to figure out MYSELF…hope this gives you hope

      1. How wonderful that you found something that helps, . I hope you continue to see improvement over time. Thanks for sharing. - Lori (Team Member)
