Extremely dry eyes and macular degeneration

I have had dry eyes since my mid 30s and I am now 77. I use Refresh Tears, Refresh gel and Refresh PM ornament. Since the first of February. I also take ARED2 and Sight Care for my macular degeneration. My eyesight has been better. I have not had floaters or any issues with losing focus since the first February. My macular degeneration is dry and not wet.

  1. Hi - Thank you for sharing your journey with dry eye. It sounds like your treatment plan is quite comprehensive. Do you have any tips for those who may be newly diagnosed with this condition? What have you learned over the years that helped you find good results? Appreciate any insights you're able to share! - Cody (Team Member)

    1. to be honest it has been trial and error. Years ago I was told I had dry eyes and I couldn't wear contacts. But no one explained to me why, or how to help it. I ended up doing my own research and trying different things. Frustration let me to find my on solutions. I am a veteran and the VA does an actual better job of explaining things than the private sector doctors. I will be getting tear duct plugs on the 11th of April, my wife has them and says they really help. And some of my research says that it may also help my sinus issues and I seem to have a lot of drainage that could possibly be due to my eyes draining down through my tear duct so much. I really notice it when I use the eye drops.
My recommendation is not just take anyone's word for things not even your doctors do your own research and always ask for second opinions.

  2. I got the permanent tear duct plugs plugs put in both eyes. The first thing I have noticed is less drainage down into my throat, the second thing is tearing of both eyes.

    1. My dry eyes are responding well to the nightly use of eye ornaments. I alternate between Refresh PM and Mura 128. I researched how best to apply the ornaments and it has rewarded me with much better results. It seems that holding my lower eye lids open to form a pocket and placing the ornament in that pocket is the best way to apply the ornament. Then I moved my eye around while keeping my eye lids closed. Then I remove any excess ornament from the outside of my eye lids. I am having less gritty feelings and my eyes feel refreshed when I wake up. In the morning I wash my eyes and fact to complete the process.

      1. Day 90 of my journey to help my vision!
My extremely dry eyes that my eye doctor called them in January are no longer dry most of the day. I use mostly the Mura128 ointment at bedtime now, and my eyes are even tearing up so much more often during the day mostly the mornings. I sleep with an eye mask to help keep the ointment in my eyes. My vision seem to be mostly stable now, but I do notice some improvements when not wearing my glasses, which are now my prescription glasses from 3 years ago. I pay attention to the brand name of Timex of the bathroom clock and each week I have noticed it becoming more easier to read. This morning without my glasses I actually was able to read it from about 5 foot from it. I can also see the MD chart from 3 to 5 feet and the grid is perfectly straight lines. I am still wondering what my eye exam appointment in late July will bring.
My daily prayers is for Jesus just to keep my vision where I can read God's Word and see His wonderful Creations,
