My eyes have gone from dry to tearing all the time

I have had dry eyes since my 30s, about 45 years. A year ago I hot serious about helping myself. Now my eyes tear up so much more. I have honestly from not being able make tears to waking up to tearing up eyes. I have tears duct plugs now. I take omega 3 supplements, as well as other supplements for my macular degeneration. My vision has greatly improved and my eye doctor even said that my macular degeneration has improved. I do have cataracts too. After 18 years of not changing from pin point size my cataracts are enlarging and hopefully can be removed soon. The tearing of my eyes stop for the most part the middle of the day and my vision improves drastically. I have experimented with not using the ointment at bed time and using Tera Tears, or Refresh Gel. The gritty eyes say the same and the tearing in the morning hasn't changed. My eye doctor was blunt about me using the ointment at bedtime. But I am open to suggestions. But according to my eye doctor prescription drops or ointments are off the table.

  1. I went for a second opinion today. I am going to have my cataracts removed. The doctor said if it wasn't for removing my cataracts he would recommend removing my tear duct plugs. Since stopped the diuretics my eyes have reversed from dry to tearing way too much. My next step is all the measurements below removing the cataracts, setting the actual date.

    1. Hi there, best of luck. Keep us in the loop! -Lauren (Team member)

  2. I am finding that my vision and my eyes are much better if I don't use the ointment or gel at all. And I find that I seldom really need to use eye drops other than my daily allergy eye drops.

  3. An unofficial update. My eyes are very comfortable I am using Systane Complete PF at bedtime. When I get up in the morning I am using an allergy eye drop. During the day I only need to use the Complete PF once or twice during the day. My eyes are very comfortable and my vision is very good too. I also need to add I use an eye wash after showering. This seems to be helping me to not have as much of an issue with Gritty eyes at night.

    1. So great Chuck! I'm glad to hear that you are doing well. All the best, Lauren (Team member)

  4. I get my right eye cataract procedure on April 27th. My left eye hopefully on the 11th of May. The eye doctor and I talked a good bit. He said the procedure should cause any issues with my macular degeneration but dry eyes is more than likely going to be an issue. I am optimistic as my eyes are doing great at this time due to removing the diuretics from my routine.

    1. Best of luck for your procedures! Please let us know how you make out. -Lauren (team member)
