Meibomian gland disorder

I have had this for more than 2 years now. I'm a software developer and I had to quit my job last year as my condition turned very severe. I cannot look at screen for more than an hour in whole day. When I look at screen for more than 5 minutes my eyes pain like there are thousand needles my eyeballs get heated, and my eyelids are all itchy and heated especially left eye. Eyelids feel dry and very hot it's unbearable. How to make it better and how to resume my career?

  1. Hi - Thanks so much for taking the time to post your question. We have a great resource on managing meibomian gland disorder here: https://chronicdryeye.net/video/quantum-device. I hope that it's helpful. We also have an article which discusses some of the at-home remedies you can use to manage this condition here: https://chronicdryeye.net/clinical/meibomian-gland-dysfunction. Some people report using things like heated eye mask have also been helpful in breaking down the oils that can become trapped in the gland. Check that out here: https://chronicdryeye.net/video/heating-mask. Have you tried any of these solutions before? - Cody (Team Member)

    1. Hi thank you for responding I'm doing all the home remedies and my doctor has prescribed a cyclosprorine ophthalmic solution 2 weeks ago so started that(and this treatmentmay take upto 4-6months to show results). My dry eye condition is so worse even with drops(I am using systane complete and aquim t) I cannot look at screen for more than 10 min and I am a software developer. Due to which I had to quit my job last year. Is there any way where I can at least start seeing screen like a normal person?

    2. Ah, it sounds like you are in good hands with your doctor. The only things that immediately come to mind are working on developing an environment that works with your dry eye. We naturally blink less when looking at screens, so that can exacerbate your dry eye. Here's a link to some more info and tips: https://chronicdryeye.net/living/changes-work-lighting. It likely won't eliminate your dry eye, but it may make it more bearable. - Cody (Team Member)
